Canstruction® is a US-based non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to end hunger through a design/build competition held in cities around the world.
Canstruction® is the foundation of the Society for Design Administration, an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects. Teams of community members—from churches, community organizations, business, schools and even families—mentored by local architects, engineers or construction companies compete to build incredible, edible structures.
The results are stunning sculpture exhibits with a strong message to aid in the fight against hunger. Open to the public, the story of the structure unfolds educating visitors about those less fortunate and how everyone can help make a difference. All the food is donated to local hunger relief organizations for distribution to hungry men, women, and children in the local community. All food stuffs and funds remain in the competition’s city.
2013 Event
The 2013 Columbus Canstruction® committee, Fair Oaks Mall and United Way of Bartholomew County invite your organization to support
the 5th Annual Columbus Canstruction®. This annual event will take place at Fair Oaks Mall from February 16 to 24, 2013. Proceeds will benefit participating Bartholomew County food banks.
Columbus’ sculpture exhibition will be open to the public in Fair Oaks Mall.
In comparison to much larger cities across the country where similar competitions are held, teams in Columbus are primarily composed of members of community organizations who have at least one engineer or architect. Columbus organizations actively support local food banks and we believe the strong engineering base and affection for architecture that Columbus has makes us the perfect location for a Canstruction® event. Winners of our local competition are submitted to compete on the national level and potentially the international level. Teams are responsible for acquiring the cans and funds needed to build their designs. All food stuffs used in the sculptures and collected in public voting will be passed to our local food banks, along with any monetary donations received.
In addition to the cans used in the construction of the sculptures, the public is encouraged to donate cans at the CAN booth at the mall or through online voting ($1 = one vote) for their favorite sculpture. A People’s Choice Award will be given to the sculpture that receives the most public support.
The excitement is in the building! Think you have what it takes to design and build a structure made of nothing more than canned food, ingenuity, and luck?
